A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Vice-Chancellor Brian Cantor received the award in Grosvenor House, London, last night, at a ceremony attended by more than 1,000 staff from universities and colleges across the country.
The judges were impressed by York’s record in scientific discovery, as well as its success in combining academic excellence with social inclusion. Its achievements this year include completing the first phase of a £500 million campus expansion on time and under budget, winning its third consecutive Queen’s Anniversary Prize, and mapping the genetic code of the herb Artemisia annua, to help tackle malaria.
Professor Cantor said that it was a ‘tremendous tribute to the hard work, dedication and ability of staff, students, alumni, friends, colleagues and partners, here in York and throughout the world. I want to congratulate you all for your efforts in helping us to achieve a great result. These are challenging times but we look to the future with confidence. We know we have a great team here. The University of the Year Award proves it’.
Students also expressed their delight at the award. Mitzi Barber, a second year psychology student, said that ‘it’s a very well deserved award and its great that York has built such an impressive reputation over the past few years, especially for a relatively new university’. Rachel Bush, another second year psychology student said ‘I just can’t believe it! Really?’
Dr Nicola McDonald, of the Department of English and Related Literature, was also nominated as most innovative teacher of the year.
The University of York was nominated in three other categories, as well as being shortlisted was shortlisted for the Widening Participation Initiative of the Year and the International Collaboration of the Year for the work of Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP) on its Artemisia Research Project. In 2003 the University received a ‘University of the Year’ award from the Sunday Times.
