Students victims in chase and smash attack

Police arrive
Police...Escort home student victims
Tuesday, 23rd October 2007
Last night three York students were victims in a bizarre chase and smash attack while catching a lift in a local taxi.

The students were catching a lift home when two men approached their taxi and started trying to physically attack it. The taxi then pulled away but the men caught up, screaming insults at the people inside.

Eventually they managed to smash through the glass of the driver's seat.

The female History and Politics student, who declined to be named, said: "The two men walked out from near the Vic, and then came near us shouting. We pulled away but they smashed the glass of driver's seat. I was really scared at that point - the glass was everywhere and I could see tiny specs of blood. I'm still picking the bits of glass off me now."

The taxi managed to get away before the men could do any further harm. Apart from minor cuts, nobody was seriously hurt.

The victim said: "There was no apparent reason for the attack. It seemed a stupid thing to do since we were right next to Ebor and the taxi drivers far outnumbered the two men."

The three students had been returning from a night out in Leeds. After the taxi had escaped, police were called to escort the students safely home. Further action may be pending.

The 659 659 taxi driver was commended by the students for staying calm in a difficult situation.
