Students to receive national vote

Wednesday, 24th October 2007
New plans have been announced which aim to give students a voice in government.

Lord Treisman

Prime Minister Gordon Brown committed to listen to the voices of Britain when he became Prime Minster, and as students make up 2.3 million people in Britain, it appears Brown is keen to hear what students think.

The new department will create a ministerial position. The post of 'Minster for students' will be taken by Lord Treisman. It will also see the creation of 'student juries.' These are expected to be held in London, Sheffield, Bristol and Manchester, and are meant to be an open platform in which members can voice their opinions about a range of topics in higher education.

Secretary for innovation, universities and skills, John Denham, said: "The prime minister has made it clear that he wants to listen to people across the country to capitalise on their insights and expertise.

"This new approach I have announced today will mean that for the first time students' voices are heard at the heart of government."

Other plans revealed include a new, 'National Student Forum' where information is expected to be compiled from students and reported directly to Westminster.

Lord Triesman, said: "We need students to tell us how higher education is working for them and what more can be looked at to make things better.

"The NUS has been urging us to talk more to students and I am confident that the programme of listening we have announced will allow us to do just that."

This is not the first time Treisman has dealt with University students, he has held posts at Cambridge and Warwick universities' as well as holding various positions in the new Department of Innovation.

The Department was created by Gordon Brown, and one of the members, John Denham, MP has been busy meeting students up and down the country. He recently met, and answered questions from the officers of the York University Students Union.
