A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

The new department will create a ministerial position. The post of 'Minster for students' will be taken by Lord Treisman. It will also see the creation of 'student juries.' These are expected to be held in London, Sheffield, Bristol and Manchester, and are meant to be an open platform in which members can voice their opinions about a range of topics in higher education.

Other plans revealed include a new, 'National Student Forum' where information is expected to be compiled from students and reported directly to Westminster.
Lord Triesman, said: "We need students to tell us how higher education is working for them and what more can be looked at to make things better.
"The NUS has been urging us to talk more to students and I am confident that the programme of listening we have announced will allow us to do just that."

This is not the first time Treisman has dealt with University students, he has held posts at Cambridge and Warwick universities' as well as holding various positions in the new Department of Innovation.
The Department was created by Gordon Brown, and one of the members, John Denham, MP has been busy meeting students up and down the country. He recently met, and answered questions from the officers of the York University Students Union.
