The £20.2 million building housing the York Law School and the York Management School was unveiled on 4 July, followed three days later by the opening of the £30 million Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFTV) building.
York graduate Caroline Thomson, currently Chief Operating Officer of the BBC, formally opened the Law and Management building, which boasts modern study areas, a Harvard-style lecture theatre in the round and a moot court.
Thomson also delivered the inaugural Cantor Business Lecture, looking at ‘Accountability, Change and Creativity: Public Sector Management in Balance’ and the annual lecture will support the Law and Management Schools in inviting distinguished speakers to the university.
Professor Stuart Bell, Head of the York Law School, said: “This new building provides a unique facility within which to develop the skills and techniques needed to work with the law in an applied context along with a depth of knowledge and understanding of legal principles.”
Professor Steven Toms, Head of the York Management School, said: “The York Management School offers research-led, quality teaching, based on influential scholarship, international profile and strong links with business in a world-class university environment to develop entrepreneurial and highly employable graduates. Our new building and the expansion of the campus provides us with an excellent environment in which to conduct these activities.”
A second new building on the campus housing the Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFTV) was then officially opened by York graduate Denise O’Donoghue, now Managing Director of ITV Studios, on 7 July.
It offers two theatres, two television studios, a large sound stage, production labs, extensive post-production facilities and a digital cinema, as well as rehearsal and changing rooms, making the facilities some of the best of any UK university.
The opening event showcased work by some of the Department’s students, followed by tours of the new facilities.
University of York Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Cantor said: “These superb new facilities provide a creative and inspiring location where students from across Britain and the world have access to innovative teaching, research and technology, providing them with a world-class academic experience.”
Professor Andrew Higson, Head of the Department of Theatre, Film and Television, said: “This is an incredibly exciting and inspirational building in which to work. The extensive media facilities are central to our teaching, which provides students with professional as well as critical and contextual skills.
“The Department has established strong connections with the media industry and creative practitioners both locally and nationally, and has an excellent network of industry professionals, who regularly visit the department to provide masterclasses and workshops.”

Both new buildings were designed following consultation with academics, industry professionals and students and are purpose-built to support and foster interactions between the university, researchers and business.
The buildings are part of the first phase of the University’s £750 million 116 hectare campus extension at Heslington East, one of the biggest developments in UK higher education in recent years.
The campus has housed Goodricke College since October 2009 and will welcome Langwith College from October 2012.
The official opening of another building on the site, the Ron Cooke Hub, will take place on 22 July.
The Hub has been in use since November 2010 and offers social and study space for students, arts and visual demonstration spaces and business meeting rooms.
The opening will be performed by Sir Alan Langlands, Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England, who will also give a lecture on the Higher Education sector.
