The Dr.Dre motion

Dr Dre
Wednesday, 19th January 2011
At tonight’s UGM, the motion to get Dr Dre to play at York University’s central hall will be put forward.

A Facebook campaign has begun attracting lot of attention with just over 700 members at the time of writing. The Facebook page states how the music scene in York has gone somewhat downhill from ‘Pink Floyd in the 60s’ to’ Eoghan Quigg in the 00s.’

Richard Costello who has proposed the motion told The Yorker his reasoning behind choosing Dr Dre, "In short he is one of the only artists I can think of who combines both critical acclaim with mass market appeal."

An obvious question that springs to mind is if the motion is passed, how the task of getting Dr Dre to York will be achieved. Costello refers to the example of Dr Dre and Timbaland playing at a High School’s graduation in California. Costello thinks it "will be a difficult task, but not an impossible one."

However, there is more to the motion than Dr Dre. Costello told The Yorker, "The motion itself discusses the York music scene. One particular part of it which I am particularly keen on promoting is a consultation with students about which acts currently play at the University and who they would like in the future."

Voting on this motion will open on Thursday morning.
