The York Apprentice stepped up a gear tonight with a triple eviction as the competition reached its semi-final stage.
Just three teams are left in the running after an intense day-long task which saw hopefuls designing a children’s toy from scratch.
Teams Bi-Winning, Locus and Four Profiteers were all evicted after failing to impress the judges with their products.
Their brief was to think up a toy that could be pitched to retailers, with the help of high street stores such as Disney and the Early Learning Centre.
“This was one of the more difficult tasks, as it’s not based only on revenue…it requires lots of different skills,” said India Perry, co-Event Director of the Apprentice.
“We were concerned that they weren’t really asking the shop assistants the right questions…but they all did the right things, and they each came up with completely different products”.
Successful teams The Three Marketeers and Ignite are through to the two-day final round, which starts tomorrow.
Also scraping through were Zenith, despite criticism from the judges that they had not “thought enough about the feasibility” of their product.
The Apprentice, now in its third year, is the York Entrepreneurs’ Society’s flagship event, with prize money this year reaching a new high of £1,600.
Perry promised teams their toughest challenge yet in the last round, which climaxes with the grand final on Saturday evening — but she refused to be drawn on what the task will be.
“They’ll be pushed hard for time and put under pressure,” Perry said.
“It’s something we’ve never done before at the York Apprentice”.
The Three Marketeers’ Rory Jones, whose pitch for “interactive language toy” Lingo-Bear saw them progress to the final, was optimistic about his team’s chances this weekend.
“We’re the team to beat…we’ve been gaining momentum all week,” Jones, who came second in the competition last year, told The Yorker.
“We’re ready to kick some ass in the final.”
