Last week the motion to rename the New Building Study Space, currently known as the Leyland Study Space, after Brian Blessed was passed with the highest number of votes for any motion since 7th February 2008.
On hearing the news, Chris Reynolds, a third year History student and president of Doug Soc who forwarded the idea at the Union General Meeting (UGM), told the Yorker that he was "ecstatic to hear of the passing of the motion". He went on to say: "It is honestly the most important thing I have done in my entire time at university."
The renaming of the New Building Study space is now seen as being a real possibility to Reynolds. Contact has already been made with YUSU’s officers David Clarke and Ben Humphrys as to what the next steps are to be. Now the idea had to be presented to the library committee to convince them to change the name.
As part of the demands of the motion at the UGM, YUSU has to provide a monthly update as to the progress the motion is making until the end of the year, as well as referring to the building as The Brian Blessed Centre for Quiet Study when they are discussing the area with the University.
Reynolds further stated: "The motion is a tribute not just to democracy, but also a reminder that despite some of the horrible things that happen in this world, nice things happen too." When he originally proposed the motion it was his belief that people were going to hate him for it, but it was after speaking to an ex-YUSU officer that he thought it was worthwhile putting through. "I've been very impressed with the support for the motion; there seems to have been almost no opposition at all."
A letter to Brian Blessed to endorse this idea is also in the process of being written and should be sent soon.

How appalling that a group of pathetic students should have the power to impose a purportedly 'ironic' sense of humour on any decision. Blessed's tenuous connection with Yorkshire bears no relevance to the university and serves only to make a mockery of the name of a building.
#1 Lighten up, yeah? I think, as students and as a university, we should be serious about academics, but never take ourselves too seriously. We don't want to wind up like Durham, FFS.
If the man himself can visit to inaugurate the study space, then that would amazing too. (I am, however, curious about this Leyland person - who was he/she and what was his/her contribution to the university? If it was substantial, then surely another study space should be named?)
And BTW, Blessed's "tenuous connection with Yorkshire" includes being born and raised here. I'm still waiting for the Judi Dench connection with the Dept. of Theatre, Film and Television to materialize.
