A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.

Graduate Students' Association elections begin

The Graduate Students’ Association is holding its elections to appoint five part-time paid officers and two student trustees to run York’s postgraduate students’ union for 2011-2012.

Over a quarter of the student body at York is now postgraduates and the GSA is the primary representative body for these students. The University of York is one of few universities in the UK to have and fund a students’ association specifically for postgraduates.

The GSA’s aim is to provide a social community for postgraduates through a dedicated postgraduate welcome week, regular events, trips, and free sport.

It also represents postgraduate views on a variety of university committees, provide academic and welfare support and offer advice on all postgraduate matters.

The positions up for election are as follows:

President - Leads the organisation in meeting with the University and promoting engagement with postgraduates

Candidates - Karin Diaconu, Luke Malkin, RON

Academic Affairs Officer - Co-ordinates the Association's efforts in any academic matters, including representing students on appeals and managing course reps

Candidates – Beatrice Akua-Sakyiwah, RON

Welfare Officer - Responsible for any student welfare issues, as well as ensuring the University provides a supportive environment for all postgraduates

Candidates - Ryan Hanley, Charlotte Phillips, RON

Services Officer - Will co-ordinate the events and sports programmes of the association, manage college GCRs as well as organising Graduate Welcome Week

Candidates - Oloyede Abdulkarim, RON

Finance Officer - Manages the budget of the organisation as well as overseeing and reporting on its accounts, will also co-ordinate the GCRs

Candidates - Karisha George, RON

2 Student Trustees - 2 Students will sit on the GSA Trustee Board, which provides oversight on financial, management and policy aspects of the association

Candidates - Heather Rowley, Richard Rhodes, Robin Jervis, RON

Candidate Question Time will be held in Edge at Wentworth on 25th May from 7.30pm.

All postgraduate students will then have their opportunity to cast their vote electronically between 12pm on 27th May and 4pm on 3rd June.

The results will be announced at the end of York’s Postgraduate Forum on 8th June, around 6pm.

Slightly concerned that two of the candidates have never been graduate students, how can they possibly know what the issues affecting postgraduates are?!
