Ziggy's felt "conned" by Carnage bar crawl

Carnage?
Students paid £8 to go on the bar crawl
Wednesday, 31st October 2007
Ziggy's spokesperson Andrew Elliott is the latest person to condemn the "Carnage" bar crawl which took place on Sunday.

Elliott lashed out at the night out, expressing his distaste for the event itself. He said the nightclub had participated in the event "in good faith," as "a facility for students," thinking that it would be similar to the YUSU-organised Viking Raid of two weeks ago. However, he said he now felt "conned" by the organisers of Carnage, and that there was "absolutely no way it will happen in our doors again."

Carnage, run by an independent company, was a bar crawl which cost £8 for four bars and entrance into Ziggy's, as well as a t-shirt.

One student who attended Ziggy’s on Sunday, but who was not a participant on the bar crawl, said: "I find it disgusting. All you got for £8 was a T-shirt – nothing else. All the bars on route and Ziggy’s don’t charge for entry, and I don't think there were even any drinks offers available. Anyone who bought a t-shirt really wasted their money."

Last week tensions between the YUSU and Carnage reached boiling point, with YUSU ordering posters to be taken down by colleges. Initially YUSU's concerns were on welfare, after Communications' Officer Sam Bayley passed around pictures of women taken from the Carnage website. Relations worsened when it was mooted in the union executive that YUSU should set up a facebook group to campaign against the event, and email the Press to distance themselves from it.

In the event however, the union decided to focus its criticism on the value of carnage. Many YUSU officers joined the Facebook group called 'Is it just me, or is Carnage a total waste of money?', which was created by Grace Fletcher-Hall, YUSU Academic and Welfare Officer.

YUM Chair Daniel Ashby said: "I left executive meeting feeling uneasy. I certainly didn't think it was the union's job to decide what is and isn't good value for students - that's their free choice. Should the union campaign against McDonalds' burgers if they think Burger King do a cheaper option?"

In a move to keep their student appeal, Ziggy's has recently moved toward plans to also offer free entry on Friday and Saturday nights, in order to create a more student-orientated weekend. They are also planning to bring in rock and reggae DJs to put Tuesdays on the Ziggy's calendar.

The organisers of Carnage have made no official statements on the event and the yorker has not been able to contact them in time. Any statements will be released.

"Relations worsened when it was muted in the union executive" -- you meet "mooted".

I think its ridiculous. How did you not tell this was a waste of money from the posters? Why on earth would anyone go in the first place?

"you meet mooted" - you mean 'mean'. Now get a life.

I assume that sneering comment was not from the author of the piece. If The Yorker is to be taken seriously, then it does matter that mistakes like the one I pointed out are picked up. If the writers are hoping to forge careers in journalism, they're going to look pretty stupid producing portfolios with errors in them.

Yup, it was pretty obvious from the posters that it was a waste of money.

But then so was the Halifax "STYC night" on Wednesday of week 1. All the £3 wrist band got you was some really terrible drinks offers on unpopular drinks with very small discounts. Corky's shots for a pound was the main thing. WOO! :/

Oh, by the way "Officer Sam Bayley passed around pictures of women taken from the Carnage website." needs some context. I mean, I assume these women were in some state of drunkenness but there's nothing in the article to confirm that.

Not context, but clarification or more detail. Something like that. I don't want commenter 3 chasing after me now do I?

Just to give you some more details from YUSU's perspective - we were campaigning on several grounds - value being one but the main problem being the safety and welfare of our students. It was mentioned in the meeting that a lot of Unions won't work with Carnage after their first experience. Another issue we had was regarding noise - Micklegate is a hot-spot for noise complaints and we wouldn't want student-organised events to suffer because of problems caused by Carnage (in the event, this wasn't a problem, because the event was nowhere near sold out).

The students on the website whose pictures I printed were hopelessly drunk and they're completely inappropriate to be displayed on such a public forum.

If anyone has any questions or worried about this they should contact me on communications@yusu.org

Sam Bayley
YUSU Societies & Communications Officer
