At time of press 314 people have liked the facebook page and it is full of arguments for and against the moving of McQ's. Alia Khalil, one of the creators of the page and bar-rep for McQ's last year told the Yorker "the group was started to inform the wider college about the plans to move McQ's from its current location, into the Roger Kirk. It was hoped that discussions would be initiated amongst the college to get a sense of what the general feeling was about the proposed plans."
According to Khalil the new McQ's "will have a capacity of 56 and will open out on to the Roger Kirk with no definite boundaries, or separate entrance."
Khalil supports the move but can see the cons on the proposed plan to move McQ's. "As a bar rep last year, I understand firsthand how hard it is to get people down to McQ's. I think that McQ's is long overdue a refurbishment and the complete removal of it to the Roger Kirk seems to be a good idea, as it will be facing the college and part of a larger facility.’
Still, Khalil also believes that problems may arise due to the large capacity of the Roger Kirk center "the bar itself will have a capacity of 56, and will open out onto the Roger Kirk which has a capacity of 1000. The space is so large; it may feel empty and discourage people from using it."
In addition to this she believes the PA system may be a problem "as we have been told that for bar events such as the quiz, we will be unable to use our portable PA system, but will be hooked up to the Roger Kirk one. This means that small weekly events will be hard to organize as it means we either address the whole of the Roger Kirk or no one."
However, she goes onto say that "McQ's needs a change and now that there is money behind the project perhaps this is what the college needs."
Roger Kirk feels like an airport. Sure it's modern and nice, but so transient. Who wants to drink in an airport bar?
Pilots?
Ah yes, the well-known pilot contingent from the University of York Flying Society, or FlySoc for short. I'm sure all 0 of their members will love the new McQs...
Why is McQ's throughout the article spelt without an apostrophe, when in the picture it obviously has one...?
because there will shortly be two of them? Maybe it's clairvoyant punctuation.
