The first, put forward by Phoebe Cullingworth, concerned ethical merchandising, and petitioned to lobby the university to join the Workers Rights Consortium (WRC), which monitors violations of labour rights among university garment suppliers. The motion was passed with 429 votes. This means that the university now resolves to commit to ethical merchandising, and to meet with the Vice Chancellor to discuss affiliation to the WRC.
The second motion was proposed by Emma Brownhill, and was concerned with the issue of NUS representation, something which has recently become important to students in light of the tuition fee rise. The union noted that the stances adopted by the NUS nationally rarely reflect accurately on the views of the student body at York, and that to take full advantage of the NUS affiliation fee means using the political platform it offers effectively. The motion proposed that the YUSU president publicise all NUS meetings, and access fairly the current methods of delegation selection for conferences. This motion was passed with 231 votes for, 22 votes against, and 50 abstentions.
Motions that have been passed stay active for three years. The next UGM meeting will take place next term.
