This Monday saw the much anticipated launch of the 2011 programme, with announcements made regarding the theme and acts. As ever, there is much hype surrounding the date as tickets have subsequently gone on sale to all through the YUSU shop yesterday.
Basshunter and Sub Focus have been confirmed as the headliners for this year’s event, which falls on 30th June.
The inter-continental theme for the night has been dubbed “Come Fly With D” and will feature various themed areas, from Russian bars to Thai parties, and more ‘exotic locations on campus’ are to be announced soon.
Students have welcomed this year’s plans, the majority being pleased with popular names attained from dance and club scenes to really emphasise this as an end of year party. Together with the two main acts, Derwent members unveiled other performers Lethal Bizzle, Crystal Fighters and the ever popular Itchy Feet.
Many may remember Basshunter from his chart domination in 2008 with smash singles ‘Now You’re Gone’ and ‘All I Ever Wanted’, as well as a subsequent stint in 'Celebrity Big Brother'. Whilst Sub Focus is not as widely recognised, he has been a key producer and DJ for some years now, having worked with Example and remixed Prodigy and Dizzee Rascal tracks in the past. He is set to cement his success with a round of festivals this summer.
As ever, ticket demand is expected to be high and delays plagued ticket launch yesterday due to an overwhelming surge of demand across the YUSU website.
Previously, there had been reassurances that the capacity of the website traffic had been expanded so as not to have a repeat of last May’s difficulties: yet, the support for the event was still too much for the website.
In a Facebook message, Greg Brocklehurst has asked students for their patience at this time, stating “there are still tickets to be released to the event which will be sold at a later date.”
The Yorker will bring you more news surrounding the event and an interview with the Derwent Vice-Chairs (responsible for organising ‘Big D’) very soon!
