Motion for Alternative Freshers’ Week riles College JCRCs

Tuesday, 24th May 2011
The motion for an “Alternative Freshers’ Week” put forward during YUSU’s last UGM has caused quite a stir within the college JCRCs.

Langwith Chair Cem Turhan told the Yorker, “Each College puts in their utmost effort to organise seven great Freshers’ week… that will be inclusive to all.”

“We are doing daily non-alcohol events, and of course those that contain alcohol will be still fun for non-drinkers,” Turhan went on to say.

However, creator of the Facebook Group 'Vote YES to Alternative Freshers' Week!' Joel Hellewell said that the Alternative Freshers’ Week would in fact “improve the freshers’ experience at York significantly” and would also mean “second and third years can get involved more easily through society events.”

According to Hellewell, “The motion is more to provide a framework for a complementary Fresher's week so that we can begin to organise events next year.”

Nevertheless, Hellewell admits that he “regret[s]” the “minimal interaction with College Chairs before putting the motion forward.”

Should the bill pass, however, Hellewell told the Yorker that he would be “communicating with them [College Chairs] every step of the way as to how AFW and non-alcoholic college events can co-exist whilst pursuing both of our aims.”

Turhan also told the Yorker he would like to “meet with the proposers and discuss their issues … [to] put together a huge, amazingly fun packed fresher week with lots of opportunities.”

With all the other motions being debated, I'm surprised this one has drawn the most anger! IT seems rather inoffensive to me.

When Derwent JCRC invest as much in their non-alcoholic events, even proportionally, as in their shitty Club Ds, then maybe I'll believe them when they say they take non-alcoholic events seriously.
