Lecturers' union face fall-out on a deal

Strike
UCU: To consider a response to UCEA this week
Monday, 5th November 2007
A lecturers' strike on campus may be back on the cards unless a deal is reached at crunch meetings in the next few days.

Jocelyn Prudence, the University College and Employers Association chief executive, said: "There's a great opportunity now to strengthen things or blow it."

Two years ago the AUT lecturers' strike resulted in seminars being cancelled and exam marking being postponed. Some students graduated later than expected.

This week vice-chancellors and lecturers put a breakthrough on choppy water when disagreements emerged over whether lecturers should have their own sub-committee to decide pay. The University and College Union are the principal supporters of the measure, but they have alienated other unions who represent manual workers.

Vice-chancellors and employers last week made moves to try and prevent lecturers from being able to go on strike during exams as happened last year.

UCU will be holding a special conference in the coming days to deal with what it sees as an active threat from employers.
