University of York Amnesty International campaign against US execution

troy davis
Wednesday, 1st June 2011
University of York Amnesty International (UYAI) has been campaigning against the execution of Troy Anthony Davis, an American man convicted of murder.

Davis, who was convicted of the murder of Savannah, Georgia police officer Mark MacPhail and put on death row in 1991, has maintained his innocence throughout the 19 years, claiming false witness identification. After a slew of rejected appeals despite witness recantations, Amnesty International started campaigning against the 43-year-old’s execution in 2007.

Speaking to the Yorker, Chairman of UYAI Mariel Stringer-Fehlow said, “We're not arguing that he's innocent or should be released, just fairly tried and definitely not executed when there is such doubt surrounding even the most basic of ‘facts’ about this case.”

Since his initial conviction, seven of the nine initial eyewitnesses who had linked Davis to the murder have unofficially recanted or contradicted part of their initial court testimony, citing reasons such as police coercion.

The U.S. Supreme Court rejected Davis’s most recent January 2011 appeal without comment in March, paving the way for the execution date to be set.

In effort to convince the U.S. Supreme Court to give Davis a new hearing or clemency, UYAI has collected just under 300 signatures and has also added around 30 photos to online petitions.

“All of this helps show the Georgia State Penitentiary that the rest of the world does care about the individual, and justice for that individual, and continues to pressure them to reconsider their decisions,” said Stringer-Fehlow.

Although UYAI’s campaign on campus has come to a close, more information of Davis’ case, and the online petition can be found here.

UYAI is holding birthday celebrations for Amnesty International’s, who turned 50 on May 28th, today. Check out the Facebook events here and here for more information.
