A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The first incident was last week when residents of the Derwent-Langwith extension got an early Halloween surprise when the intruder entered the block on Tuesday 30 October.
The tall, unknown male was first sighted by Luke Bailey, a resident of Derwent E block, at around 7.00pm. "I'd never seen him before," said Luke. "He was just behaving really oddly, walking round and round the grass and looking in through the windows." Luke alerted his housemates, but the intruder then disappeared.
However, the man reappeared on the other side of the extension at 11.00pm, walking into the kitchen of Langwith F block, House 3, where an impromptu pre-Halloween party for the house was in full swing.
He was just behaving really oddly, walking round and round the grass and looking in through the windows.
Andrew Atherton, a resident of the house, described how the man simply walked into their kitchen, sat down and began drinking. On asking the man in which college he lived, he replied "just over there", and when questioned about his course, said that he was "trying a bit of everything to see what he fancied".
The house were alarmed and called security, who arrived just a few minutes later. They removed the man when he failed to show a university card upon request.
I’d just like to remind people of the importance of keeping all doors and windows locked
Residents of the house have since discovered that other students have seen the same man walking around campus, and have made a complaint.
The Derwent incident raises old questions about the state of the college's security. Asked about the specifics of security improvement Derwent Chair Jamie Tyler said: "Apparently estates are on it but they have be for a year now so I'm not really hopeful. They seem to prioritise less important things, which is really shit."
YUSU Welfare Officer Grace Fletcher-Hall said: "I’d just like to remind people of the importance of keeping all doors and windows locked, and of never holding a door to accommodation open to anyone if you don’t know who they are."
