York academic named one of ten BBC prizewinners

zoe norridge
Tuesday, 12th July 2011
Dr. Zoe Norridge, of the department of English and Related Literature at the University of York, has been named as one of ten winners of the BBC Radio 3 and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) inaugural New Generation Thinkers scheme.

The nationwide search for academics with the capacity to turn their academic material into fascinating broadcasts resulted in over 1,000 applicants applying.

The applicants were eventually reduced to just ten over a six month selection process by a judging panel of Radio 3 producers and AHRC academics.

57 finalists took part in day-long workshops at the BBC to learn how to transform scholarly research into an interesting radio programme.

Norridge’s research interest has been the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, about which she says she is "looking forward to talking about the ways in which it is memorialised with a wider audience".

She will now work closely with the production team of Radio 3’s programme Night Waves, and will be given the opportunity to appear on air in special New Generation Thinkers debates and sessions.

Norridge said that she has "enjoyed meeting inspirational colleagues from across the UK", and added that "it’s a great honour to be one of the final New Generation Thinkers".

The scheme was launched in November 2010 at Radio 3’s Free Thinking festival of ideas, and was aimed at academics who were passionate about sharing their scholarship with a wider audience.
