Gallery grabs top nightclub in York award

The Gallery
Unexpected Gallery takes top spot for clubs
Tuesday, 13th November 2007
The Gallery Nightclub has won the accolade of York’s top nightspot in the Best Bar None awards.

The club stole the prize for top nightspot away from 2006 winners Nexus.

The Old White Swan on Goodramgate was awarded "Best Pub" while Orgasmic on Coney Street, was awarded the title of best bar.

The Best Bar None competition was introduced in 2006 as part of an incentive for licence holders to increase the standard of their premises, while decreasing the occurrence of binge drinking.

The venues were judged by the police, the fire brigade, City of York Council's licensing department and Trading Standards. They were judged on how well customer health and service criteria were met.

The awards are seen as a welcome acknowledgment for responsible drinking in York to help curb drink-fueled crime.

The Yorker asked some students what they thought of the competition. Most were in favour of the competition if it reduced street crime.

Joe Butler, a student at York, said: “I think it’s a good thing; if it will make nights out in York safer for students then they should go for it.”

Some students hadn’t even heard of the scheme. Rachael Yates, also studying at York, said: “I hadn’t ever heard of the competition before now and to be honest I don’t think it will make much difference to where me or my friends go to for a drink.”
