A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
A brand new YUSU bar has opened this term in the Roger Kirk centre, James College.
The Lounge is the newly refurbished student bar built to take the place of McQ's, which closed at the end of last term. The interior is separated from the James dining hall in the Galleria and offers students a new place to meet and drink.
The Lounge has a modern style and serves its own created cocktails and maintains its student feel with the use of an American-style pool table.
First year student, Huw Davenport, when asked what he thought of the Lounge said: “Really good, really enjoyable. It has got a good social aspect and I liked the atmosphere. It’s a good place to go for meeting people from your college.”
Mr. Davenport also commented on the partition wall, which separates the bar from the dining hall, and said that it looks tacky and not in keeping with the look of the bar.
Second year James College student, Emma Hawkens, added: “It has a nice drinks menu and seems to be popular with first years. I don’t think the atmosphere is quite there yet. I think this is mainly due to the partition wall not being quite ready as this means it is sometimes opened up to the entire empty dining hall.”
Another first year student, Josie Answell, complained: “The service is crap, only the tall people get served!” when she partook in one of the quiz nights. However, she went on to say that it was a really popular night. “The atmosphere was lively. So many people came that they had to expand it,” she added.
The opening of the Lounge at the start of this term happened alongside the closure of McQ's, which has been bricked up over the summer and is no longer functioning as a bar.
When asked if McQ's will be missed, Miss Hawkens said: “Yes. It was the only pub on campus and now we just have a lot of similar looking bars. The Lounge looks a lot neater and a lot nicer, however McQ's was more for students and The Lounge looks like it's more for conference guests. You can really tell that when you go in.”
One of the main criticisms of McQ's was the lack of food and The Lounge offers pizzas every evening, which seems to have gone down favourably with students. “We all want beer with our chips!” said Miss Hawkens. “If I were in the mood for having takeaway food, I may consider instead going to The Lounge given that it does pizzas,” added Mr Bridge.
This is not the first bar on campus to come under YUSU management - Courtyard is run by the union and is popular among students. With mainly positive reactions so far, it seems The Lounge will enjoy similar success.
