A new Foundation set up as a memorial to a late student of the university has had its first two scholars welcomed to the University of York.

The Jiangning Foundation was created in memory of Jiangning Wang, who was a student with the University of York ’s Department of History of Art before her death in 2009.

Jiangning was one of the first students from mainland China to attend the University of York, and it is hoped the foundation will help other Chinese students come to study at York.

The foundation’s work has been started with a pair of MA scholarships for Chinese students at the University with the Department of Art History, Kuang Sheng, and Yingcun Jin, who are now settling into life at York.

The head of the department of History of Art at York, Professor Mark Hallett, said: “Jiangning was one of the first people from mainland China to study art history at York, and we hope that Yingcun and Kuang are the first of many more Chinese students who will follow in her footsteps. The Jiangning Foundation offers wonderful opportunities for British and Chinese students and scholars.”

The Foundation aims to improve scholarly interaction between the East and West and to promote teaching and research into Asian-European artistic exchange.
