University Radio York (URY) saw great success at the 2011 Student Radio Awards on Wednesday, picking up a variety of well-earned accolades.
The station as a whole won the silver award, placing them second in the country after Nottingham's URN, and ahead of 54 other stations. Specific show awards were granted to three URY programmes; two speech and one entertainment.
The Chalk and Charles Show, a music and chat-based show presented by Charles Lewis and William Chalk, won gold for 'Best Entertainment', beating off fierce competition from Xpress Radio (Cardiff), and Fly FM (Nottingham Trent).
The speech section of URY came home with two awards: the Kevin Green Award was won by The Prince of Humberside, a black comedy by Tess Humphrey, and bronze in the 'Best Speech' category went to The More Beautiful Game by James Bugg.
Darren Webb, station manager, voiced his pleasure at the successes: “Everyone has shown so much commitment to URY this year and every team has really gone beyond my expectations, and I am so proud that our achievements have been nationally recognised at the Student Radio Awards 2011.”
Webb is confident that this year's success “can be built on” by the station, which was recently refurbished in a team-effort that saw the project successfully completed in the tight time frame of the Easter holidays, causing minimal disruption to scheduling and providing an extensive, modern studio for all student presenters.
In the wake of this week's national acknowledgement and anticipating the nearing elections which will see positions at URY for the coming year filled, he describes himself as “fully confident that URY can continue to improve and offer an even better service to the students of York.”
