A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The event, which was held as part of national Student Finance Day, featured local universities and colleges working together to ensure prospective students, their parents, teachers and the media understand the new student finance system.
Simon Willis, the University of York’s Director of Admissions, said: “The aim of the national Student Finance Day is to ensure people understand exactly how the new student finance package works and dispel some of the myths which might make people think that university is not for them.”
Willis continued: “One of our main aims at York is to make prospective students aware of the support available within universities, colleges and student unions and where they can go to access this financial support. Having this information will allow them to make an informed decision about progression to university or college.”
The event comes amidst the backdrop of a fall in applications for 2012 to UCAS of 12% nationally, and of 17% in Yorkshire and the Humber. The University of York has not announced if it has seen a fall in applications.

Lewis added that the failure to communicate the reality of the fee changes is “a national scandal”.
