Robert's friends, along with professors from the chemistry department, have been organising the memorial, which will be planted in the department grounds.

The memorial is expected to be in place by the end of term.

Joe Butler, a friend of Robert's, is pleased with the idea to plant a tree in Robert's memory. He said: “I think it’s a really good idea, it will be a place for Rob’s friends to come and remember him, and we can see the tree grow over the years.”

The tree is expected to be an almond (prunus dulcis) and is likely to have Robert's ashes scattered in with the backfill.

Rob disappeared after a night out in York with friends, his body was later recovered from the river.

The Facebook group in his memory attracted hundreds of members, and Rob's friends were praised by many for their efforts in organising a search after his disappearance.
