The University of York Cricket Club has defended the club after it came under criticism on the York Vision website.

York Vision, the YUSU ratified tabloid, published a story on Monday November 28 claiming that the Club had sent an “offensive” email and that the “Cricket Club deserved condemnation”.

The President of the University of York Cricket Club said in a statement that “as a society, we obviously do not condone offensive or inappropriate emails” and took the opportunity to “apologise to anyone whom may have taken offence to any emails sent”.

The Yorker understands the club has been unequivocal in their condemnation of the email. A UYCC source stated his belief that the “offensive remarks do not represent… people who, like me, play cricket at York because of their love for the game.”

Sam Ashfahani, York Sport President, has already called for the club to face sanctions from YUSU, whilst the YUSU ratified Poker Society is not expected to receive any retribution for their plans to hold a “black up” social. The Poker Society is yet to condemn the comments made on the official Facebook event for the social earlier this term.

The matter is likely to raise debate regarding YUSU funded media’s relationships with sports clubs and the extent to which the actions of rogue individuals can be held against entire clubs.

Comments on the York Vision website have thus far been supportive of the cricket club in the wake of the article, and one of the top rated comments asks whether this was a “slow news day?” for the tabloid.
