University acts to relieve parking problems

The university has had to take urgent action after parking problems at the new Heslington East campus left some drivers trapped in the car-park.

Problems with the new barrier system at the site meant that some people who had entered the car park after 6pm were unable to get out as the barrier system did not accept their ticket.

A spokesperson for the university told The Yorker that: “In order to facilitate exit from car parks for visitors attending events outside core hours on Heslington East, the barriers into/out of Field Lane car park will be raised at 6.30pm each evening, and will be returned to operational position as soon after midnight as possible.”

The problem seems to have occurred as the university charges no fee for parking between 6pm and midnight. Despite this, the barrier system required all tickets to be validated at the payment machine, regardless of whether there is a fee to pay.

If individuals did not go to the payment machine before attempting to leave the car park, the barriers invalidated their ticket which then became unusable.

These problems came to light following the university’s ‘Politics and The Media’ event held on Wednesday, November 9.

Attendees at the event were kept in the car park for over 20 minutes until a University representative came to override the system. At least one car drove over the pavement in order to get round the barriers which weren’t functioning.

The Yorker understands the university has been holding high-level meetings regarding its parking problems and that this could delay the rumoured introduction of barriers at the campus south car park.

Development of the entrance to the car park which leads to the sports centre and the physics and exhibition centre occurred last year, with many speculating the university was looking to replace the current pay and display system with barriers. It is understood that the pay and display system is frequently flouted as it is difficult for the university to enforce.
