A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
YUSU has secured the future of the Clubbers’ Bus after agreeing to drop the Sunday service with providers Unibus.
As previously revealed on The Yorker, the service provides transport back from YUSU-sponsored club nights to campus for only £1. It leaves at 2am, 2.45am and 3:30am from outside the clubs and is designed to help students back safely.
Bob Hughes, YUSU Welfare officer, told The Yorker: “I am delighted that the service will be running into next term, especially as this term was a trial to see if it was feasible, and it did seem at some points that we wouldn't be able to continue it.
“A lot of publicity and word-of-mouth later, the service regularly has almost-full buses leaving on the Tuesday and Thursday, which works out as roughly 200 students per night, which I am very happy about,” he continued.
The success of the scheme will be seen as a victory for Hughes, who has championed the scheme since its inception at the beginning of this autumn term.
The Yorker understands that YUSU is looking to develop the scheme further, with talks of more weekday nights being offered in the future. However Hughes noted: “For the moment I am happy with the service and want to make sure that we embed the Clubbers' Bus into students' routines for a night out.”
Concerns were raised however at the last YUSU Welfare Committee that the bus was inaccessible to those with disabilities. Hughes confirmed that he has contacted Pullman's about accessibility and plans to meet with them soon, promising to push “for accessibility across the service”.
Students wishing to catch the Clubbers' Bus should go to the Rougier Street bus stop (the stop before the station, outside Club Salvation) at either 2am, 2.45am or 3am. The journey to campus costs only £1.
