The Derwent JCRC elections are underway and are highly contested as usual, with five candidates standing for chair of the committee.
Edward Schwitzer comes to the race as a fresh face, having never held a position on the JCRC. Current training officer for the Debating Society, Schwitzer told The Yorker that he has “experience of sorting things out”, can organise sessions and appeal to Freshers.
Schwitzer believes his policies are the “things that people really care about” and include holding open JCRC meetings before the bar quiz and making the JCR clean and accessible, particularly to second and third years who “have no way of getting in!” Schwitzer has pledged to stop the JCRC becoming a clique, promising a strong work effort and “put everything into it”.
Harry Dorrance-King told The Yorker that his main aim is to “maintain college spirit” in Derwent, particularly as Derwent will include the current Langwith accommodation from the start of next term. He aims to achieve this by maintaining a Derwent nucleus at the “social centre of the college”, with “communal spaces” between the Derwent and Langwith blocks to encourage integration between the two blocks.
Dorrance-King, who previously was chair at a water-sports centre in Deptford, one of London's most deprived boroughs, believes that his experience rowing at a high level gives him “pure determination, to never stop and never give up”.
Harry Pampiglione, current Derwent College Ents Rep, also focuses on the expansion voicing the concern that it could “turn Derwent into another disconnected and apathetic college”, promising that he “will not let that happen”. He wants to endorse “inclusivity through sports and events, especially through promoting women’s sports” and introducing a Derwent Card, offering discounts exclusively to Derwent students.
Pampiglione, believing his experience on the JCRC will benefit the college, told The Yorker that his “experience and passion” differentiates himself from other candidates. Pampiglione, the Volleyball Club Secretary says that he loves “all things Derwent and always step up to pitch in and help out”.
Flavio Newcomb’s main policy is to create the position of Block reps on the JCRC. He believes this will help him meet his three targets of “improving the connection between the JCRC and the rest of Derwent”, “increasing integration of E & F Blocks and Eden Court” and developing the “transparency and accountability of the JCRC”.
Newcomb also wants to increase knowledge about JCRC motions and work on encouraging non-members to attend JCRC open meetings as he believes they are currently” focused around interests and motions that current committee members argue over”. Newcomb also plans to greater support college sports by providing termly sign-up sessions.
Francesca Knight is the fifth candidate for the position. The Yorker contacted her but did not receive a response.
