A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Measures include full 24-hour library opening, to be trialled in the spring term; night-time staffing in every college; extra funding for key texts; free sports membership and an international York Study Centre, though it is yet to be decided as to whether there will be more than one, or in which countries the International Centre(s) will be based.
Though many of the measures have been hinted in at the past, and some are long-term YUSU campaign promises, there are some previously named possibilities that are notable in their absence. Providing free laptops to all students, a highly debated option, is not on the list. The provision of mandatory text books for no charge is likewise missing and the option to make all printing on campus free also misses out.
The highly-student-supported moves to minimise the staff-student ratio and refurbishment of additional teaching spaces have been agreed to by the Senior Management Group, with increased staffing of the award-winning Open Door team and continuation of the (previously grant-funded) Maths Skills Centre showing that the SMG are also considering the welfare needs of students.
