The hustings are over, and with campaigns in full swing, the Langwith JCRC elections for 2012 are now taking place. Members of the college may now vote for the people they feel would best represent their interests over the next year.
Chairperson
This year, Langwith has one candidate running for the position of chairperson – former Langwith LGBT officer Jack Baker. At hustings, Baker listed his key aims as to keep communication channels open between JCRC officers, and to help to guide the college in a smooth transition to its future home on Heslington East campus, while maintaining Langwith’s unique college spirit through events and college sports.
Following on from this, he supports events to celebrate Langwith’s last year on Heslington West, and also wants to work with Goodricke College to try to ensure that Langwith’s new bar on Heslington East will be up to everyone’s expectation, and to “campaign for more social space in New Langwith”.
Another of Baker's aims is improving Langwith’s reputation in sport, by working closely with Langwith’s new Sports Officers to ensure that college sport is “opened up” and “more accessible”.
Responding to a question posed by 2011’s chair, Cem Turhan, Baker illustrated that he would be able to deal with the pressures associated with the position through his ability to organise his time effectively and to call on his past leadership experience.
Baker also suggested his intention to use surveys and questionnaires to gather what members of Langwith college want, and how they want to be represented, after York Sport President and former Langwith Chair Sam Asfahani raised the issue during questions.
Vice-Chairperson(s)
The candidates for Vice Chair – Craig Burnell and Jason Brandwood – both appeared to run for the position at the last minute, but after the issue was raised as a question, re-affirmed their commitment to the role, and a desire to serve the college and to assist the new Chair.
Secretary
Running for the position for the second time, now uncontested, Marinus Maris illustrated his support for greater transparency through opening up access to JCRC meeting minutes.
Treasurer
Contested by Kieran Douglas and Timothy Seah, both candidates appeared to express their desire to ensure Langwith students get value for money from their JCRC, but differ in other aspects.
Welfare Officer(s)
Contested by Lauren Bray & Jordan Lloyd and Jess Lambert & Chris Maul, both pairs gave their commitment to organising interesting and more varied non-alcoholic events for those who choose not to drink, and to incentivise STYCing more so that freshers get a better experience as a result of more motivated STYCs.
Entertainments Officer(s)
Perhaps one of the most contested positions this year, by two groups: Katie Bishop, Johanna Child, Bethany Leslie and Sofie-Eliza Price against Sam Dower, Tom Flaherty, Matthew Jones and Dan Strong (and originally by one individual, Louise Jones, who dropped out after hustings). All illustrated a commitment to giving Langwith a reputation for great events, and all had very interesting ideas for future college events on-campus, off campus, alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
Off-Campus Officer(s)
Contested by Rowan Austin & Peter Hollingsworth and Jason Brandwood & Elliott Weatherall, both pairs illustrated a desire to assist freshers with housing for their second year, and maintaining college spirit off campus.
International Officer(s)
Another highly contested position this year by Alicja Heisig, Agata Lach and Diederik van Wersch, each of whom had different and compelling strengths and ideas for the role which appeared to seek to bridge the divide between home and international students.
Uncontested Roles
Ordinary Members – Genny Dimolene and Amy White, Equipment Officer – Joe Rees-Jones, Web Officer – Tom Bourne, Volunteering Officers – Sophie York and Katherine Hignett, Environment and Ethics Officer – Ellie Hendy, Merchandise Officers – Lee Cook and Sam Prime, Sports Officers - Cassandra Brown, Andy Hutt, Jess Paisley and Sam Morley, Bar Officers - Ollie Craven, Ewan Dennis, Ed Kent and Joel Shenton, and Campaigns Officers - Luke Holbrook and Oliver Williamson.
The roles of Rag Officers, Sponsorship Officer(s), Newsletter Officer(s), Publicity Officer(s), LGBT Officer(s) and Disability and Access Officer(s) have no candidates running in this election, and nominations for those positions will re-open later in the academic year at by-election time.
Full details about every candidate, including their specific aims and objectives, in contested elections are available to Langwith Students on the YUSU website.
Voting opened Wednesday, December 7 and closes Monday, December 12 at 10am. The results will be announced at the Langwith Christmas Ball at 7pm on the same day.
