The results were revealed at Vanbrugh’s Volume event, FAIRYTALE OF OLD YORK, on December 9, where college students packed the Vanbrugh main hall to find out who would make up the committee for 2011-12.
Vanbrugh had four candidates running for chair and it was Matthew Stephenson who managed to gain the affection of the most students, claiming a winning total of 201 votes.
Close behind in second place, Charlie Knox gained 178 votes, followed by Feargus Hosking-Jervis (139 votes) and Adam Lewis (110 votes). Fifth-placed 'RON' received 24 votes.
Speaking to The Yorker during his campaign, Stephenson revealed he has not previously held a position on the JCRC but insisted this would not be disadvantage. “I am hugely passionate about Vanbrugh, as shown by all of the inter-college events I competed in, and I think that having a fresh face in the committee will be very beneficial,” he said.
After being elected as chair, Stephenson said: "Getting this position means the world to me, and I know that with a committee as strong as the one elected last night we can make make real change within Vanbrugh for the better.
"I really want to make a special mention to Charlie, Adam and Feargus. The fact that it was such a close contest shows just how much passion all of the candidates have for Vanbrugh, and I am sorry that we cannot have every single contestant who went for positions this year on the committee.
"I think the winning factor was my visiting every block in Vanbrugh and trying to meet as many people as possible, explaining my policies and letting people get to know me better as a person and decide for themselves if they thought I would make a good chair."
Stephenson's main policies are to promote college sport societies to “help them to be as successful as possible”, to promote music societies so all students can participate, and to ensure V-Bar becomes a successful hub for the college. He also wants to fight for a 24-hour porter service “to create the safest and most helpful environment possible”.
He added: "The first thing I am going to do is to congratulate every single person who was elected last night. The fact that we had so many people running for positions shows just how much love there is for this college, and I think that this is what makes Vanbrugh so special."
The college’s new secretary will be Sophie Easterby-Smith, who was Eric Milner A Rep last year, while Daniel Whitmore was elected treasurer. Kate Elliott, a RAG Rep last year, was named vice chair for welfare and will be supported by former Bar Rep Ben Rodin, who will be vice chair for entertainment and services.
Other students who are serving another year with the JCRC after being on last year’s committee are new merchandise rep Yemi Nathan, who was an ents rep last year, David Lindley, who remains on as webmaster, Ray Mahmoodm who has been re-elected as a sponsorship rep, sports rep Megan Phillips, and Pippa Henstock and Jamie Beckett, who move from ordinary members to female and male welfare.
Only one position was not filled - Wentworth E Rep – but all other 26 positions saw students elected into them.
