A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Turhan, who is also the outgoing Langwith College chair, was elected to the role of LGBT officer in the YUSU by-elections earlier this week. He will hold the position for one term before YUSU elections in the spring term.
Speaking to The Yorker about his election, Turhan said: “It's great to be elected. It came as a bit of a shock considering I was up against Tom Martin who is an amazing guy, but I was so happy because I found out literally 30 minutes before leaving for the Langwith ball so it felt like perfect timing as the new Langwith chair was going to be announced.”
Turhan added however that, as he is a finalist, he won’t be running for the position again next term but aims to “have the committee in a great place for the next officer(s)”.
He revealed his numerous plans for LGBT awareness events next term, saying his main aim is “for people to have a fun term and to enjoy going to exciting events”.
“After Langwith's super successful Love Music Hate Homophobia event, I'm planning on doing another larger one,” Turhan said. “I also want to do awareness events on political affiliation and homosexuality with a debate with different LGBT people who support opposing parties, as well as an awareness event on culture and homosexuality. I'm excited about a new innovative poster campaign I'll be launching so look out for that in January.
“Welfare support is important, but I'm not a counsellor... I'm a third year with two jobs who is also still the chair of a college so I really just want everyone to be happy and have fun! Although saying that, I am going to be getting MESMAC onto campus to provide information on LGBT counselling and sexual health services.”
Turhan also expressed his desire for others to get involved with the committee, which still has positions open after elections at a closed meeting earlier in the term.
“I'm really keen for people to do things they want to see done...so if you want to do an event, or have an idea, let me know so we can work together towards it,” Turhan said. “If people want to get involved please email me at lgbt@yusu.org to find out more about each role and be co-opted onto the committee next term.”
The positions still available on the network are Asexual Convenor, International Convenor, Mature Convenor, Racial Equality Convenor, Trans Convenor and Women's Convenor. All the positions can be held by up to 3 people who self-define into that group.
A well deserved position for Turhan. As a proud Langwithian, I have to say he has been fantastic as college chair and will no doubt deliver in his one term in the position. One imagines he will offer a less militant approach than his opponent would have given the various articles that have been written on Tom Martin's questionable conduct in the Goodricke elections.
Questionable conduct? I tend to be somewhat out of the loop on campus politics; what happened?
I think #1 is referring to the following yorker article and the open letter written by peter sharpe condemning the elections. it all makes for fantastic viewing.
