It's Yes to NUS: York students vote 72% in favour

NUS
You love it: IMAGE BY YUSU
Friday, 16th November 2007
York students have voted to keep YUSU in the National Union of Students with 72% majority for the "Yes" campaign.

The result was announced on Vanbrugh paradise just over an hour ago. The vote reached quoracy with 1,389 students voting in total. The "No" vote got 378 votes, or 26% of the vote. 2% of students abstained.

A leader of the "Yes" campaign Tom Langrish said that the "No" campaign had put up a good fight, but ultimately that students have realised how beneficial the union was.

He said: "I'm overjoyed with the result. It shows that so many students have taken an interest in the debate and have realised that the NUS is so beneficial to the students' union and to the individual students themselves."

The result, however, shows a much larger sway towards "No" than at Newcastle University earlier in the week - 91.7% of their union voted "Yes".

Did anyone else have problems voting? When i made my vote, it informed me I'd already voted - intrigue at hand.

Slight correction - 1005 students voted yes, not in total - there were 1389 votes altogether.

Anon, you didn't actually have a problem voting, just when the page refreshes it tells you that you've already voted (and therefore can't again). We'll change the wording for UGMs in future, but your vote did count.

"Did anyone else have problems voting? When i made my vote, it informed me I'd already voted - intrigue at hand."

Don't worry - that's just how the system works. What it means is "you have already voted just now, about half a second ago". It's not very clear and will hopefully be changed for next time. Any problems with voting, or comments on how the referendum was run should be made to the Matt Burton, the returning officer.
