An idea born out of a post-match pub trip, the necessary photo shoot took place on Monday, 12th November. Team member Tommy Sheldrick described the experience: “Taking the pictures of all of us on the astroturf was absolutely hilarious, especially as we had to run from one end to the other with pretty much everything on show!”
The theme of calendar is that of a complete football match experience, with the photos progressing from the changing room, to the pitch, post-match showers and finally, to the pub.
It’s what Vanbrugh football is all about – sport, but also the social side too.
All team members are agreed that the project has provided much hilarity, but has also helped to built strong team friendships. Sheldrick said: “I think appearing naked together will also do wonders for team unity. Hopefully the results of our ‘team bonding’ will be seen on the pitch!” Sam Whittaker, another Vanbrugh footballer, felt that the project embodied the spirit of the team: “It’s what Vanbrugh football is all about – sport, but also the social side too.”
And the reactions of friends and family? One team member admitted: “I haven’t actually told my family, though Royal Mail will be delivering them a surprise, shall we say, ‘early Christmas present...’”
The proceeds from the sale of the calendars will be donated to Cancer Research UK, and it is hoped that the project will raise awareness for testicular cancer.
The calendars are set to go on sale in late November/early December, and will cost £4 each.
