Philosophy lecturer all set to take Christmas number one

Nick Jones
Philosophy Lecturer Nick Jones jamming

This Christmas a York lecturer is on a crusade to upset the entire music industry. Philosophy lecturer Nick Jones has joined an 8 piece band in releasing a single written and recorded by UK students and uni staff. But that's not it - they're on a mission to get Christmas number one with their "Slade meets Nirvana" sing-along.

Jones is the saxophonist for "Anarchy Xmas", the non-commercial attempt to take the top spot and give all the money to charity.

Jones said: "We need to sell 100,000 - that's the going target. I think you need to sell 100,000 in a week to have what's called a "bullet" number one. But let's be honest, we're doing it to see what we can do. The idea is that you can get a group of people together in a grass roots project to make some money for charity."

The idea for Anarchy Xmas came when a student awoke depressed on Christmas day to the sound of manufactured radio music. He decided he was going to record a song made by normal musicians and use social networks to get it off the ground. Just over six months later and the group were recording Smells Like Christmas Time.

Jones said: "It was an on the spot arrangement by a group of 12 to 15 people who had never met. We recorded the song in just over a day and a half, which if you know anything about recording that's incredibly fast." The musicians are an unusual group: a heavy metal drummer from the South coast; an anthropology student songwriter and a classical harpist to name but a few.

The chosen charities for the money made are the NSPCC, Oxfam, Cancer Research UK, Shelter and Friends of the Earth. Smells Like Christmas Time was written on September 8th and is being promoted by Myspace and Facebook. So far the group has got 2000 members - but the band is hoping for 100,000 by Christmas. That's not it for Anarchy Xmas - just last weekend they recorded their music video, which will be released on the yorker in the next week.

Smells Like Christmas Time is released on the 10th December and costs 79p. It will be available on iTunes as well as other digital music outlets.
