A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The students, in groups of two, are aiming to hitch-hike from York to Holyhead in North Wales. They will then catch a ferry to Dublin, returning to York by coach for 6.00pm on Sunday, November 25.
All participants in the hitch have raised funds through sponsorship to support RAG and its beneficiaries. This year’s chosen charities include, on a local level, Yorkshire Cancer Trust, St. Leonards Hospice and HCPT 58. Macmillan Cancer Support and Glona (a development project in Ghana) form RAG’s national and international level beneficiaries.
“I expect the hitch to go very well, it’s the first hitch since 2005 and it’s got an amazing turnout.
It is hoped that the event will raise £500 in total, however RAG intends to continue collecting through to January, and have high hopes of exceeding this target.
Hitch Co-ordinator Colin Hindson told The Yorker, “I expect the hitch to go very well, it’s the first hitch since 2005 and it’s got an amazing turnout. We’ll also be joined by Exeter RAG who are doing the exact same event and staying in the hostel with us so it should be a great weekend.”
He also added, “There’s a lot of fresher’s going so I hope that it gives them a good experience of what RAG gets up to and hopefully they’ll stay involved in the future.”
The next major RAG event for this term is Full Stop – an AIDS awareness event in Vanbrugh bar on Saturday, December 1. Next term will also see the return of RAG week, with a number of events to raise money for charity, including a RAG Viking Raid and abseiling from Central Hall
