All night protest ends with 500 signatures

Langwith Bikes
Early hours Langwith
Saturday, 24th November 2007
The Langwith 24 hour sit-in to get their porters back ended in the early hours of this morning with around 500 signatures.

Langwith Campaigns Officer Natasha Price said: “It’s been a great turnout. We’ve obtained petition signatures from people in Vanbrugh, Derwent, from porters and staff. Everyone says it’s a good idea – now it’s just to see if we can change anything.”

Students and members of the Langwith JCRC campaigned outside the college porters’ lodge throughout Friday, encouraging passers-by to sign a petition. A select group of around 50 participants continued to camp by the porters’ lodge throughout the night to show their commitment to their cause.

As part of the ‘Save our Porters’ campaign, Price and her team have prepared a document that will be presented to the Langwith Vice Chancellor and Facilities Manager to include the results of the petition and an outline of the JCRC’s plan for an ideal portering situation.

Price said: “It’s difficult; it’s not like they can turn around tomorrow and be like, ‘yes, you can have 24 hour portering.’ But we’re fighting, and it shows that we’re not accepting it as it is at the moment.”

Currently, the porters’ lodge is open between 7.00am and 10.00pm. After this time, Langwith students must dial through to Derwent or Vanbrugh and wait for an alternative porter to arrive. There have been complaints that it can take up to 10 minutes just to be connected.

Price is standing down at the upcoming JCRC elections, but hopes that her successor will continue the campaign.
