Finally busted, the man who conned students

York Crown Court 2
Mark Brown was found guilty at York Crown Court
Tuesday, 27th November 2007
Yesterday a conman who successfully scammed York students was sentenced to 12 months in prison.

Mark Raymond Brown pleaded guilty to 8 counts of deception. Brown told unwitting students that his car had broken down, and then feigned being lost, and continued to ask them how he could get home. He then asked for money toward his train ticket. He promised to return the money to the victim by arranging to meet them the following day, after leaving his mobile number.

Quote He was a very convincing man with a very convincing story Quote

A 3rd year Sociology and Philosophy student who was conned by Brown, said: “He said his car had broken down and that it was near an estate. First of all he asked me where the trains stop and where the station is. I even went over to Vanbrugh porters to check the train times with him.”

The student said: “As we walked under the cameras, he even said that he couldn’t be conning me because he was on camera. I gave him £40 to get home. He was a very convincing man with a convincing story.”

The man told the student that he would give him his mobile number and meet him at a designed place the following day. Once the conman failed to arrive, the student called the mobile number, which turned out to be fake.

The student then reported the crime to the university and the community support team. The conman was later discovered attempting to con another student and was arrested.

The scam is known to have been effective on at least one other York student who cannot be named. The victim believed he had been targeting students near Spring Lane.

Brown was sentenced by York Crown Court after being transferred from Magistrates court last week.
