Isn't it a bit insensetive to publish "the cause of death is widely believed to be suicide" before anyone knows the facts of the case?
..but then isn't it a fact that the cause of death is widely believed to be suicide? I don't want to get caught up in niggly debate on a topic so tragic, but I heard that it was suicide before I read this, so that's what I and the people who passed on the information believe. What's wrong with reporting that fact?
Well York does have the second highest student suicide rate in the country after Bristol...
@#2 - it is a fact that it is "widely believed", but it's still insensitive to publish rumour in this way. It adds nothing to the article and in fact runs contrary to the articles claim that "The Yorker will wait before it releases a full report".
I agree that this two paragraphs is in somewhat bad taste, and kind of needless - it's just gossip. The Yorker should've waited until it had the full story - a followup news item has been posted anyway.
"The cause of death is widely believed to be suicide."
.. widely believed?
From the editor:
At an editorial meeting today it was decided that naming the cause of death in this case was both unnecessary and insensitive, since it was not in the public interest. I apologise to anybody affected and have removed the sentence.
