Know your chair... Derwent

Duck
Thursday, 29th November 2007
Continuing The Yorker’s coverage of the upcoming JCRC elections, we’ve talked to those looking to become Derwent College Chair for the coming year – Oliver Lester and Alexios Mantzarlis.

Lester Policies

• Greater visibility of the benefits of welfare for Derwent students, providing ‘Welfare Goodie Bags’ after every event in Derwent, to include free contraception, testing kits and information booklets.

• Establish an anonymous email system on the Derwent website for students to contact a trained member of Welfare, with a reply within 24 hours.

• Pharmacy on campus

• Refurbishment of Derwent Bar to include ‘comfy seating, video-projectors and a fireplace.’

Mantzarlis Policies

• Bar refurbishment to the top part of the bar, allowing the lower level to still be used for large college events.

• Maintain high quality Derwent events (such as Club D)

• Make the College Chair a presence through working closely with the Vice-Chair and Ents team.

Last words...

Lester: “I think the trap that numerous candidates fall into this making promises they simply cannot keep! From the outset, I’ve planned to chose policy that I feel I can actually make work and will wholeheartedly benefit Derwent. I want to change the perception of the College Chair. I believe that a College Chair works for you, and I will fight for any Derwentian, on any issue, at any time.”

Mantzarlis: “As chair I would give the average Derwent student all they can be given. The JCRC isn’t just there for the glamorous things, like organising Club D and ordering DCUK merchandise. It is there, more importantly, for the welfare of the average Derwenter. So if elected, I would make sure to stand up for each and every Derwenter when the need arises.”
