A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.
Her Majesty the Queen will be visiting York on Maundy Thursday, 5th April, as part of the 800th anniversary of York’s Charter for the traditional “Royal Maundy” ceremony.
A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
The Yorker has sat down with both candidates to find out what they’re like and where they stand on the key issues that will face colleges in 2008.
How would you describe yourself?
Joe Clarke: “Social, ambitious, dedicated.”
Richard Coleman: “Intelligent, pragmatic, approachable.”
What are your key policies?
Clarke:
Coleman:
RELEVANT EXPERIENCE:
Clarke has been Ents Rep for Goodricke, sat on the YUSU Ents Committee and Goodricke Exec, attended (he claims) every Goodricke social event, and run two college trips to Newcastle.
Coleman has "only been here for 7 weeks" but says he has "taken part in many different aspects of university life," including attending Neighbours Society and Medieval Re-enactment Society socials.
ESSENTIAL PREFERENCES:
Football or rugby? Clarke - Rugby. Coleman - Rugby.
Brown or Cameron? Clarke - Cameron. Coleman - Brown
Cheese or Indie? Clarke - Cheese. Coleman - Cheese
Anne-Marie Canning or Burton? Clarke - Canning. Coleman - Burton.
Vision or Nouse? Clarke - Vision. Coleman - Nouse.
STANCE ON KEY ISSUES:
Heslington East: Both say they believe that the university's expansion could be a positive move. Clarke, however, stressed that it would be important over the next year "to keep up pressure on the University... to ensure that the best interests of students are kept at heart.”
Lecturers' strikes: Neither Clarke or Coleman would support another strike.
Sports vs. welfare. The one issue on which the candidates differ slightly is whether, if an increase in budget was requested for either sports of welfare, they would be biased towards one or the other. Clarke says that both currently "have an adequate budget" and that if an increase for either sports or welfare was requested "it would essentially be a JCRC decision, and I would give neither a bias." Coleman, however, believes that "college sport is in more need of funding." He says: "While on Campus I have not heard any problems concerning the provision of welfare support to the students of this college, I do regularly hear about problems concerning issues with our college sports teams."
CAMPAIGN TACTICS:
While Coleman has led a low-key campaign, Clarke has gone all out in his quest for the chairmanship, hiring an unofficial 'campaign manager' to produce the following clip:
Go Joe!
Funny thing is, last time I was referred to in a David and Goliath situation, I was David. Running as a candidate in the local elections back home earlier this year against a council old boy who had been in power for years!
Oh Nadeem.
while i'm sure Joe Clarke has had various achievments in his position as Ents officer for Goodricke i do have to take issue with one portion of the promo video. Despite their successes with Dark and white Chocolate, Joe Clarke and his team did not come up with the idea of having 'Chocolate' as an event in Goodricke, this was an event created by the previous Ents reps. Credit where its due.
Also whilst having Roger Kirk as a location for events is a good idea, if Goodricke as to have access then i'm sure other colleges would want it also as it is run by the niversity as a conference centre and not solely Goodricke's property.
