frequently asked questions

How do I update and control my society's events and profile?

Firstly, you should click the "register" link at the top. This will send us your information and the society you wish to control. Secondly you should send an email from your society email account, confirming that you are on the committee of the society to Lorn Mcvean*. We will then follow up your application to check you are the right person. If you are, you will be emailed a link to your York university account which will let you into the VIP suite.

  • To avoid bot-spam we cannot write down Lorn's email. However it is her name in lowercase, spaced with an underscore followed by @theyorker.co.uk.

How do I publish events on the yorker?

The yorker allows all services, departments, societies and venues to become "organisations" on the system. This means that your events will go up on our networked calendar. You cannot however, network your own personal events, although you can add them to your own calendar.

What services does the yorker provide to societies and town venues?

Firstly, you occupy a space in our directory. Click on the directory and go to a society to see the information you can publicise. You also get your own VIP suite, which allows you to view the paid members of your society and send them notices or emails. Furthermore you can set up teams within the society who can post their own events. This is useful for sports clubs who may want different team captains to post to different events to different members.

How much editorial control do societies have of their information?

The yorker allows you to edit your own profiles, photos, location and essential information. You can also provide us with business cards of your key committee members. Only in the event that your information breaks our company policy will we remove your information. The yorker journalists will write reviews of your organisations. Don't panic! We are not rating your organisation or expressing any value judgements. The review is simply a review of any major news regarding your society which people may be interested in.

What is the difference between Yorkipedia and "How Do I"?

"How Do I?" is information we have selected which we think you will find the most relevant and useful. "Yorkipedia" is an online database of everything in York which is in Wiki format. We urge everyone to use Yorkipedia and begin updating information which you know about or are responsible for.
