Preview: High School Musical

High School Musical

Thursday, 2nd July 2009
After the success of Happily Ever After Soc’s production of ''Grease'' in the Autumn term, the society’s second production is now in full swing. High School Musical, the Disney movie hit, is coming to Central Hall next Autumn term and is promising to be just as impressive as last year. Lisa Grijzenhout, one of the producers, gives the Yorker a preview of the fun to come.

The four leads were selected after an intensive, week-long audition process. Fraser Moyle, also seen in the Full Monty, was chosen to play Troy, and Jessi Black to play Gabriella. The two Freshers make a great pair, both displaying beautiful voices. Even more impressive are Tom Jones as Ryan and Emily Hanbury as Sharpay whose booming voices and dominating personalities take over the stage. A chorus of thirty singers are divided into jocks, geeks and thespians who all sing well together. A further ten students make up the dance core who play the Wildcat cheerleaders.

A formidable team of four directors, three producers and two musical directors are helping to keep things running smoothly. Indeed, most of the scenes have already been learnt. Week 0 has been renamed High School Musical Week and the entire cast will be on campus rehearsing intensively to ensure the show is a success.

Due to the financial demand of putting together and performing a three-performance show, cast members have been active all term selling glow sticks Tuesdays to Thursdays in town to try to avoid a deficit. But despite endless enthusiasm, Grijzenhout admits that they’re still nowhere near their target. If they do not raise enough money, the show will not be able to go ahead.

For a sneak preview of what lies in store, take a look at their Woodstock performance. If you'd like to support their fundraising efforts, cast members will be selling boxes for a pound to students that are moving house at 12-2pm, Vanbrugh stalls, from Wednesday to Friday this week.

High School Musical will run from Thursday to Saturday in week 5 next term.
