Idioteque: 'Nothing radical'

Idioteque: 'Nothing Radical'
Tuesday, 19th February 2008
Charlie Kirkbride talks to Mary Fostiropoulos (founding member) about Idioteque: the last event, what is to come and some other lovely snippets for your perusal...

Please tell us about Idioteque’s last event…

The last Idioteque was our first event involving live acts – Metropolis and Dj NoNames from Foreign Beggars. Foreign Beggars are a 5 man Crew comprising of Orifice Vulgatron and Metropolis, Dj NoNames, Beat Boxer Shlomo and Producer Dag Nabbit. They’ve supported Public Enemy, Roots, Mark Ronson, Ja Rule, Wu Tang and Grand Master Flash and have performed at Glastonbury, Fabric and Hip Hop Kemp in Prague. Their forthcoming projects include collaborations with Scratch Perverts and OHNO.

We used a new venue (Lawrence St Working man’s club) and the night focused on Hiphop and Dubstep sets. Local acts were also used. It was a huge success and we are definitely planning on getting more live acts for the future.

What is Idioteque attempting to do for music in York?

To create the type of music we wanted to hear but couldn’t find. Nothing fundamentally drastic; we just wanted to hear more of the music we listen to with friends. It was an attempt to create a good night which wasn’t punctuated by the terrifying sound of the ‘Baywatch theme tune’. We knew we weren’t the only ones and that there was a definite demand.

Who is behind Idioteque?

There are loads of people who help out in various ways – too many to mention here, but ultimately there are four of us who run it. It’s a collective effort, we split everything. Our roles vary constantly.

Describe Idioteque in a sentence?

‘When seagulls follow a trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea’.

What can we expect from the next Idioteque event?

We’re planning an electro night before Easter. We really enjoyed the last one and are looking forward to putting on a new improved version.

Where do you see Idioteque in two years time?

We have no idea where the four of us are going to be in 2 years but we hope that Idioteque stays in York and evolves here. Who knows maybe elsewhere to?

Finally, Idioteque?

Oh….it comes from a song on the Radiohead album ‘Kid A.’ There were so many arguments about the name…
