TRU: Leading the revival of York's nightlife

Thursday, 29th May 2008
We have been hearing about it for months, and now it’s finally upon us; the latest development on the York night life scene: TRU.

Perhaps it’s because Toffs is usually enjoyed when heaving with people and in a post-Nag’s Head madness, but the unremarkable décor of York’s former Tuesday night hot-spot always managed to bypass me. After its refurbishment however, and under the new name of 'TRU', the stylish interior of the club can’t fail to make an impression.

In red, white and black, the ground-floor layout is virtually the same – so you won’t get lost – but everything from the central DJ booth to the ceiling tiles are new and improved.

Quote It feels far less like a student club, having more of the big-club feel that we’ve been lacking. Quote

The upstairs of the club looks dramatically different. The bar has moved to the top of the stairs, and one of several new comfy leather sofa areas is in place of the former bar. The upstairs provides a place where you can get away from the party for a while, with R&B and chill out music being played.

For £50 a night, groups can hire out one of their sparkling new VIP booths.

The whole atmosphere of TRU is different. It feels far less like a student club, having more of the big club feel that we’ve been lacking, and craving. Put it this way, it is hard to imagine army/toga/Smurf themed socials in that environment, although the 'student ware' dress code on student nights doesn’t rule such antics out.

But aesthetics aside, you’ll all be pleased to hear that your weekly club night routine will not be affected. Tuesday nights have been re-branded 'Band Wagon' and are still going to be York University nights. The main dancefloor will still play commercial chart and party music, and the back room will still play Indie and Alternative.

Despite its swanky new look, you’ll still be able to have a reasonably priced night out; entry to 'Band Wagon' is £3.50 with an NUS (£4.50 without), and selected drinks will be £1.20 before 11pm, and £1.60 thereafter. Sunday night at TRU is still going to be gay night, with the same entry price as 'Band Wagon', and all drinks priced at £2.50.

So what’s new at TRU? As well as these old-faithful nights out, TRU is going to be running various other nights.

'Get Lost' will be held every Wednesday, with a different theme each week. The first 'Get Lost' night on 28th May is a ‘Tropical Beach Party’ theme, but ‘70’s Disco’, ‘Porn Star’, and ‘Toga’ themes are on the line up for the next academic year. 'Get Lost' is officially York St John night; but with the same prices as Tuesday nights, its worth bearing in mind if the queue for Ziggy’s isn’t moving.

'Skool Disco' will be held on the last Sunday of every month, with the offer of a free bottle of VK for those in school uniform!

Luminar, the owners of TRU, also own: Liquid & Envy, Oceana, and Lava & Ignite. They also own another branch of TRU in Brighton, and York's The Gallery.

The one million pound make over of 'the club is just the beginning to more exciting developments. The Gallery will be receiving a similar refurbishment over the summer and, aside from these two Luminar clubs, the owners of Fibbers are due to open a new club – The Duchess – over the summer, and Nexus is currently being transformed in to Club Salvation, which will open at the end of June.

York nightlife is rapidly improving, and after the opening of TRU on Friday, it seems that developments are off on a roll.

I wonder if all these refurbs have been sparked by the looming threat posed by developments at the Barbican and the rumours of a new superclub... Either way, it's about time someone attempted to do something about York's nightlife.

I thought the Barbican superclub plans were axed?

I dunno, can't find anything official looking either on the plans or their axing. Wouldn't be the first time - there was supposed to be a replacement in the place of Ikon & Diva back in 2005 that was cancelled too.

I hope the Yorker made a fair wad from this massive advert!

tru = same s**t, different prices. It feels exactly the same as the old toffs, and its 'upmarket' feel im sure will rub off in a few weeks.

Oh and the name is just rubbish. Not hard to put an E on the end is it? or maybe all the e's are in heslington hall toilets...
