Win a trip to Colombia

Columbia
Cartagena Beach
Monday, 27th April 2009
Columbia: a country that has produced national icons from the likes of Gabriel García Márquez to Shakira. A country of vibrant cities, charming port towns, picturesque national parks, salsa dancing, festivals and beautiful reefs.

Lying along the equatorial belt, the country boasts three mountain ranges, and coasts on both the Atlantic and the Pacific, as well as temperatures that make it a sun-seeker's heaven. That’s not to say there’s no variation in climate: travelling across the country the surroundings move between hot lowlands with red sand deserts, snow capped Andean peaks, and dense tropical rainforests.

Some popular points of interest include the capital city of Bogotá – a lively city, and a great place for museums, markets and nightlife; Parque Nacional Tayrona – an idyllic stretch of Caribbean coast; Villa de Leyva – an old world, colonial town; and Agustín – an important archaeological site.

Can you write a winning travel article?

If you want to experience all that Colombia has to offer, Bradt Travel Guides and The Independent on Sunday are holding a travel writing competition, with a trip for two to Colombia as the first prize.

You’ll win three nights accommodation in Bogotá, followed by three nights in Cartagena – a colonial walled city – both at three-star hotels. Transfers and guided tours are included.

For your chance to win, all you need to do is write an article of no more than 800 words by noon on Friday 15th May 2009. The theme is “Destination Unknown” and entries must contain a strong travel element.

The winning travel article will be published in The Independent on Sunday’s travel pages and the author will earn a commission from the newspaper. On top of this, there is a special prize for unpublished writers: a place on a weekend travel writing course in Spain, in October 2009.

For terms and conditions, more details on how to enter, and to read the winning entries from previous years go to http://www.bradt-travelguides.com/infopage.asp?PageID=101
