YSC Logo
Sunday, 21st February 2010
For some, the first pangs of dissertation worry are beginning to rouse in the back of our minds; for others there are exams on the horizon which are prompting us to start considering for revision. Whether these apply to you or not YSC has got some killer de-stressing movies this week including the highest grossing of all time!
  • Bright Star - Monday, Week 7

Monday has always had a history of showcasing lesser known films or classics, and this week brings Bright Star which tells the love story of doomed Romantic poet John Keats and his true love Fanny Brawne. Acclaimed director Jane Campion (The Piano) takes the helm with Ben Whishaw and award-winning actress Abbie Cornish (Somersault) as the leading pair. This drama has been much lauded as being able to do absolute justice to the lives of this influential figure in English literature with the chemistry between these two actors attracting a lot of attention. Not just for bibliophiles.

  • Me and Orson Welles – Thursday, Week 7

Based on the bestselling novel by Robert Kaplow comes Me and Orson Welles, a fictionalised account of Orson Welles’ Mercury Theatre production of Julius Caesar as told through the eyes of the 17 year-old Richard Samuels. Having been sucked into the theatrical world we see the corrupting influence of the 1930s Broadway exert its effect on the newcomer. Praise has been laid at the feet of Zac Efron in his role as Richard Samuels in one of his first serious main roles but the film really belongs to Christian McKay in his exceptional role as the iconic figure of Orson Welles.

  • Avatar – Friday, Week 7

What is there to say that has not already been said? It’s the highest grossing film of all time. It is the joint leader when it comes to Oscar nominations and walked away with the Golden Globe for Best Drama. That’s right, Avatar has finally made its merry way to YSC and it’s a great chance to see this modern-day classic on the big screen before it eventually disappears from cinemas around the UK.

York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
