YSC preview: Week 8

YSC Logo
Sunday, 28th February 2010
Seriously, when will winter end?! Previous complaints here have been light-hearted but it is becoming ever more probable that Britain has been magically transported to Narnia where we shall know the joys of neither summer nor Christmas ever again. So if you need to come in from the cold or just fancy a touch of fantasy, drama or musicality then YSC has your back.
  • The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King – Monday, Week 8
    Return of the King

This term's showing of The Lord of the Rings comes to a close this Monday with the final act in Peter Jackson’s adaptation of the Tolkien saga. Having made its way into the record books by winning the joint highest amount of Academy Awards (being the only one of the three with a 100% success rate) The Return Of The King is not just a piece of cinema history but one that will always be better on the big screen with surround sound.

  • The Road – Thursday, Week 8
    The Road

Having been adapted from the Pulitzer prize-winning novel by Cormac McCarthy The Road is a bleak look at the world after an unnamed atrocity through the eyes of an equally nameless father and son. Together this pairing need to stay together to stay safe in the face of cannibalistic hoards, an ever dwindling food supply and the constant threat of encroaching brushfire. With a fantastic eye for cinematography and exemplary performances by Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smitt-McPhee, The Road is an experience that will remain long after the credits have stopped rolling.

  • Nine – Friday, Week 8
    Nine

Film casts don’t really get much better than this. Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench and Kate Hudson all star in Nine, the latest musical offering from director Rob Marshall (Chicago). Based on the Tony award-winning musical (which in turn was based on the classic film by Federico Fellini) Nine tells the story of a director returning to his homeland of Italy in order to deal with his latest bout of writer’s block whilst simultaneously coping with the demands of all the women in his life. With a fantastic soundtrack and great performances from the ensemble (with Penelope Cruz being singled out for the most praise) Nine helps prove that as a genre you really cannot stereotype musicals.

York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
