Thursday, 29th April 2010
Welcome back from Easter. Exams and deadlines may be ahead but that doesn’t mean that the fun stops at the York Student Cinema. This week features highlights from Oscar season and some of the most vibrant films of the year.

Up In The Air – Friday, Week 1

As a previous favourite in the race for Best Picture, Up in the Air marks one in a long line of successes for Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking). With a great performance by George Clooney and many scene-stealing performances by supporting actress Anna Kendrick (Twilight), Up in the Air combines human drama, great comedic timing and a topical story that truly speaks.

Ponyo – Monday, Week 2

The latest film from Hayao Miyasaki, writer and director of Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, sees a take on the classic fairytale The Little Mermaid. Critically acclaimed in both its native country and across the pond, Ponyo is a great example of an animated film that could never be shot in real life. With some of the most beautiful hand-drawn scenes and well rounded characters that rival the best of Western animation, Ponyo is a joy to behold.

Precious – Thursday, Week 2

Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire tells the story of the eponymous Precious (Gabourney Sidibe), a girl abused by her mother and pregnant with her second child after being raped by her father, when she is given a chance at education and happiness. With a stellar Oscar-winning performance from Mo’Nique as the abusive mother and a great performance from the whole ensemble this is a moving story.

Alice In Wonderland – Friday, Week 2

This newest entry in the Tim Burton canon is his take on Lewis Carroll’s children’s classic. By arming himself with a star-studded cast containing Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter, Anne Hathaway and Michael Sheen, with a series of stunning visual effects he is able to breathe new life into this childhood favourite.

York Student Cinema is in PX/001 and the doors open at 18:45. Tickets are only £3!
