The Week in Film

- Writer Tim Herlihy has been tasked with penning a film based on this year’s hit short Pixels. For those of you who haven’t seen it, the short sees ‘80s videogame icons come alive to attack New York City. The feature film will reportedly be an action comedy in the vein of Ghostbusters, and is being produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison along with Columbia.

- Rumour has it that Zooey Deschanel, best known for quirky roles in films such as (500) Days of Summer (2009), will appear in Marc Webb’s reboot of the Spider-Man franchise as Betty Brant.

- Jon Favreau, director of the Iron Man films, has been tasked with directing Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The film will be based around the Disneyland theme parks, with a plot involving the characters and attractions springing to life. Of course, this isn’t the first time Disney has turned an attraction into a film, as they have already found success with the Pirates of the Caribbean series.

Roland Emmerich

- There’s been a catastrophe for disaster flick fans, as Roland Emmerich’s project The Zone has been canned several days before principal photography was set to begin. Emmerich’s previous films include Independence Day (1996) and 2012 (2009).

  • Upcoming Films on TV

Diamonds are Forever, the classic Bond film, is on ITV1 at 3:30pm on Saturday. Martin Scorcese’s The Departed is on Film4 at 9:00pm (also on Saturday). Sunday sees something lighter, The Spiderwick Chronicles, based on the book series of the same name is on Channel 4 at 5:45pm. Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001) is on Five at 10:00pm on Monday whilst sci-fi sequel Predator 2 is on E4 at 10:00pm on Tuesday and showing soon after is gangster comedy Analyze This (ITV2 at 12:20pm on Wednesday).

- Skyline

The first in what seems to be a whole host of alien-based movies heading our way, this film centres around an attack on Los Angeles and it appears to have some rather impressive special effects. However, what the very flashy trailer and poster don’t mention is that Skyline is directed by the Strause brothers whose only previous film is the abominable Alien Vs Predator: Requiem. Furthermore, it’s a film with no preview screenings for critics leading me to think that they are frightened about what the reaction will be.

- Afternoons with Margueritte

This French film is about a gardener who starts a friendship with the titular 95 year-old, leading him to discover new ways of looking at the world. It looks charming and good-natured, however this has received few reviews so far and they’ve tended to say that the film is rather mediocre.

- We Are What We Are

Perhaps the most intriguing and original film of the week, this is a rather unusual Mexican horror that mixes grim social commentary with the tale of a family of cannibals. The story follows the families struggle to survive after the patriarch dies and it becomes the sons responsibility to put food on the table. Without a doubt an intriguing and unusual film, it has sparked considerable interest and opened to generally good reviews.

- You Again

The week’s attempt at comedy is this film which tells the story of a woman forced to confront her high school tormentor after it is revealed that she’s to marry her brother. On the plus side, the film does feature Sigourney Weaver, however on the other hand are the simple facts that it looks unlikely to feature any originality and has already been critically butchered.

Thank God for that! The man made one decent action film over a decade ago and has been dining out on it ever since.

Pixels is a great short. It'll be interesting to see how it works on the big screen....although not sure if I like Happy Madison producing.
