Friday, 17th December 2010
  • News

- John Favreau, director of the two previous entries in the popular superhero series, has announced that he will not be directing Iron Man 3. He will instead be focusing his attention on the previously announced film The Magic Kingdom which will see attractions in a Disney theme park come to life.

- Colin Firth, most recently seen in The King’s Speech is reportedly in talks to star in a remake of the British action comedy Gambit (1966), which starred Michael Caine. The film will use a script written by the Coen brothers who are best known for writing and directing films such as No Country for Old Men. The film will be directed by Michael Hoffman who most recently directed The Last Station.

- Martin Scorsese has confirmed that Robert De Niro will star in his upcoming crime drama The Irishman. This will mark the ninth time that the pair have worked together, the first time being in 1973 for the film Mean Streets.

- Mark l. Smith has been hired to write a script for a proposed film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1980 novel Firestarter. The book has already been adapted into a film starring Drew Barrymore, released in 1984. The last time the franchise was seen was in a 2004 TV movie sequel Firestarter 2: Rekindled.

Die Hard

  • Films on TV

The fantasy comedy Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is on ITV1 at 3:45pm on Saturday, classic WWII action adventure The Guns of Navarone (1961) is on BBC2 that same day at 5:30pm. If you’re in a Christmassy mood then you should try the version of A Christmas Carol that stars Patrick Stewart - it’s on five at 7:05pm on Sunday. Whether or not you consider it a Christmas film, Die Hard (1988) is always fun to watch. It’s on Film4 at 9pm on Sunday too. Also, the Coen brothers-helmed Intolerable Cruelty (2003) is on ITV1 at 11:05pm on Monday.

  • New Releases

- Burlesque

Christina Aguilera’s movie debut is by all accounts one of the most clichéd “birth of a star” stories imaginable. As well as being perhaps the year’s most camp and ridiculous film, this has received generally negative reviews. Although, with that said, many critics have remarked that Burlesque is so unintentionally hilarious that it becomes highly enjoyable.

Tron: Legacy

- Tron: Legacy

One of the biggest cinematic events of the year, this hotly anticipated sequel to the 1982 cult classic features two performances by the wonderful Jeff Bridges, some brilliant special effects and an excellent soundtrack by Daft Punk, which all help to create the strange computer world. Unfortunately, it is apparently not all that impressive dramatically but this should be a phenomenal experience nonetheless.

- Catfish

A disturbing and fascinating documentary that has sparked rumours all over the internet about its veracity. However, whether true or not the film this is probably the best release of the week, being as genuinely fascinating as it is intriguing. Catfish sees a man uncover a web of lies linked to a remarkable family that he has befriended through Facebook.

- Loose Cannons

An Italian comedy about the tribulations of a young man coming out to his traditionalist family may sound rather awkward but apparently it’s quite good, and genuinely funny. Don’t expect anything particularly special as it has received good but not great reviews.
